TRAUMA RECOVERY
While in prison I learned a code that I lived by in order to survive. It was primarily one of revenge. While I was never one to go looking for trouble, I would not hesitate to use violence to settle a dispute. Therefore, it became a way of life to me. When I was released from prison, I was full of hate. One day, I began to look inside myself for the source of the rage I had nurtured for so many years. It started me on a journey that caused me to look deep inside myself. In the process I learned to love. Now that may sound trite, but that is really what life's journey is all about, learning to love self and others. Once I learned to forgive myself then I was able to be more forgiving of others." - RC, NM 2002.
This is an excerpt of a letter I received from RC after we had had many long sessions using the Insightful Change Method. The changes in him were so profound that I did a clinical study on his progress. Our first session together was when he was in a state of rage and depression and was planning a murder-suicide. I really didn't know if I could help, but simply trusted the process knowing that I had only one opportunity to gain his trust and create a shift hoping to buy us some time to have more sessions. His first session created a profound shift and a release of pent up anger and grief that went back to the age of 14 when he watched his father bleed to death. This was just one of the many traumatic events we went on to address. We continued to have regular sessions as he overcame his depression and suicidal thoughts. He stabilized emotionally and had the respect of all that knew him by the time he died in 2007.
